Common pickleball injuries and how to prevent them

Pickleball is safe — until it isn't

Pickleball is lower-impact than tennis and gentler on joints than basketball. But it still involves rapid lateral movement, sudden stops, and quick direction changes on hard surfaces. The player demographic — primarily 40-65 years old, many returning to court sports after years away — means joints, tendons, and ligaments may not be ready for what the game demands.

The most common injuries

Ankle sprains lead the list, caused by lateral cuts on an unstable base. Knee pain (patellofemoral syndrome, meniscus irritation) follows, driven by repeated impact on hard courts with insufficient cushioning. Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, and calf strains round out the top five — all related to the stop-start, multidirectional movement pattern of pickleball.

Footwear is the most controllable factor

You can't control court hardness or your age. You can control what you put on your feet. Proper court shoes provide lateral stability (preventing ankle roll), surface-matched traction (preventing slips), and impact cushioning tuned for court sports. This is the single highest-leverage prevention measure a player can take.

Players with prior ankle injuries should prioritize shoes with high ankle support ratings. Players with knee concerns should prioritize high cushioning. Wide-footed or flat-footed players need wide-fit options with motion control to prevent overpronation-related knee stress.

Beyond shoes: other prevention strategies

Warm up with dynamic stretching before play (leg swings, lateral shuffles, calf raises). Strengthen ankles and knees with resistance band exercises. Don't play through pain — pickleball's "just one more game" culture is a setup for overuse injuries. Consider a pre-season check with a sports medicine professional if you're returning to court sports after a long break.
